Carbide Burr Uses in Industry

A carbide rotary burr, also known as a rotary file or a die grinder bit, is used to cut, shape, and grind parts and remove sharp edges, burrs, and excess material (deburring). The carbide burr design is ideal for working with aluminum metal. Carbide burr sets for aluminum grind or deburrs aluminum and other non-ferrous metals.

If you work with air tools and shape, grind, or cut, you are familiar with carbide burrs. Steel, iron, and titanium are among the materials used for wood, ceramics, and fiberglass.

The carbide burr comes in various shapes, allowing you to choose the right burr for the job. Its applications include pneumatic rotary tools, die grinders, high-speed engraving machines, Micro Motors, Pendant Drills, Flexible Shafts, and hand tools, such as Dremels.

Single Cuts and Double Cuts

Single and double carbide burrs are the two most common cuts. In a single cut or one-flute burr, there is a spiral flute, sometimes called an uppercut.

Burrs made of single-cut carbide are commonly used to mill, deburr, and clean ferrous metals, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened steel. Burrs made of double-cut carbide have two flutes. Diamond-cut or crosscut are terms sometimes used to describe them.

Carbide burrs are frequently used on both ferrous and non-ferrous metals because they create a smoother finish. Additionally, they are used with wood, plastic, or ceramic materials. Making sure that you match the proper cut to the job will help you achieve the desired finish.

Shapes and Sizes

Different shapes and sizes of carbide burrs are available for single-cut and double-cut burrs. While using the right tools for many jobs, it's best to invest in a set of burrs in different shapes and sizes.

Carbide burrs will work at a different speed depending on their size. Depending on the job, the speed can vary, but experts recommend starting slow and gradually increasing the speed. Slow speeds will result in jagged edges and clogged flutes.

Carbide Burrs come in a variety of sizes and shapes, each of which can be used for different purposes, as explained below:

An Arch Ball/Pointed Nose - Texturing, engraving, and expanding the hole size.

Ball – concave cuts, hollowing, shaping, carving. Suitable for wood, stone, metal engraving.

Ball Nose Cone - Surface finishing, rounding edges and working in tight spaces.

Carbide Ball Nose Cylinder - High-quality surface finish.

Tapered (Ball Nose Tree) - Rounding corners and concave cuts.

Cone - Shaping edges, finishing surfaces, tight spaces, access to hard-to-reach places.

Cylindrical - A contour finish and right-angle corners.

Cylindrical End Cut - A contoured finish.

Cylindrical Carbide No End Cut - A contoured finish.

Flame - Structuring and channeling.

Inverted Cone - Rear-side chamfering and v-cuts.

Oval - A grinder and an engraver

Pointed Tree - Access to hard-to-reach areas, concave cuts, round edges, and acute angles.

Rounded Tree – Concave cuts and rounding edges

Motion and Pressure

When working with a carbide burr, use light pressure to prevent damaging the material or the burr itself. To achieve the best results, maintain a motion. To achieve a smooth finish, finish each job with an upstroke.

Carbide burr uses are applicable for many materials. They are perfect for working on softer and precious metals like gold, platinum, and silver as they are long-lasting and do not chip or break.

Commonly Used Carbide Tools

BURR - NO END CUT

Featuring a professional double-cut style and a more robust tooth formulation, these cylindrical burrs are ideal for stock removal, chip breaking. They have a longer life than other double-cut carbide burrs.

BURR - END MILL END

Made of heat-treated, durable, double-cut carbide, long-lasting, sharp, and strong, this tool comes with a nano blue coating that preserves vital sharpness and lubricity with extreme nano-hardness. This way, long-term results and high-quality cutting are achieved.

This carbide burr has excellent performance, high efficiency, clean chip removal, no dust pollution and is very stable and reliable.

BURR - 135 DEGREE DRILL POINT END

Our 135° diamond cut, drill point end mills for plastics and composites are ideal for routing fiber reinforced, epoxy resins, and composites.

They feature a diamond-cut flute pattern for smooth cutting action and reduce delamination. Our Carbide burr extension tools are perfect for adding that extra reach for carbide burr grinder die bits.
