Hirt Line Coolant Delivery Systems

Modular coolant lines that hold their aim — 216 components in stock at FM Carbide

A Hirt Line assembly is built from sealed ball-joint segments clamped by screw nuts. Loosen the nut and the line articulates freely, so you aim the coolant by hand; tighten it and the joint seals and stays where you put it, through the vibration of a full production run. That is the difference from the flexible plastic coolant hose most shops start with: those need re-aiming, and eventually they stop holding position altogether.

Four systems, one way of working

Every Hirt Line system works the same way. What changes between them is the flow size, which is what sets how much coolant you can put on the cut. Pick the system from the supply you have and the volume you need, then build the line from elements in that system.

System Thread size Flow size Typical use In stock
Typ 0 1/8" 3.2 mm Swiss and small turning centers, tight envelopes, single-point misting 25 parts
Typ 1 1/4" 5.8 mm The general-purpose size: VMC and lathe work, most retrofits 93 parts
Typ 2 1/2" 11 mm Heavy roughing, flood cooling, wide flat-jet nozzles, manifolded lines 68 parts
Typ 3 3/4" 19 mm Large machines, chip flushing, washdown and high-volume delivery 30 parts

If two sizes both work, take the larger one: a bigger flow size can always be throttled at the nozzle, and reductions are available in both directions if you need to step a heavy supply down to a finer nozzle.

What a line is made of

Three parts make a working assembly, and the rest of the catalog exists to shape it:

  • An adapter fixes the line to the machine. One end is the Hirt Line joint, the other is the thread, the ball or the fitting your coolant outlet already has — pipe threads from 1/8" to 3/4", metric threads from M5 to M14, hydraulic fittings, and ball connections for Traub, Okuma, Mori Seiki, Wenk and Loc-Line.
  • Basic elements give the line its length and its shape, from 11 mm segments up to 1000 mm. Chain as many as the reach needs; each joint articulates.
  • A nozzle decides what the coolant does when it arrives: round outlets from 1.0 to 19 mm, multi-hole patterns, 30°/60°/90° heads, ring nozzles that feed inward around the tool, and flat jets up to 70 mm wide for face and shoulder work.

Beyond those: elbows, T-pieces, Y-pieces and star pieces to branch or turn without adding length; screw nuts and spanners; ball valves to shut off one branch without stopping the pump; manifolds with blanking plugs; cap pieces and seal plugs; reductions between systems; and plastic nozzles where a metal one would mark the part.

Start with a basic set

If you are putting a Hirt Line on a machine for the first time, the basic set is the efficient way in. Each one contains enough elements, adapters and nozzles to build a complete working line, plus the two spanners that fit it, and the assembly is rated to 100 bar through its sealing ball-joint connection.

  • 0-GS — Typ 0, 1/8" system, 110 mm of line
  • 1-GS — Typ 1, 1/4" system, 220 mm of line
  • 2-GS — Typ 2, 1/2" system, 240 mm of line
  • 3-GS — Typ 3, 3/4" system, 320 mm of line

Reading a Hirt Line part number

The number tells you the system and the function, which makes reordering straightforward once you know the pattern. The leading digit is the system — 1-DU-32 is a Typ 1 part — and the letters are the function:

  • GE basic element  ·  DU nozzle  ·  AD adapter  ·  WV elbow or branch  ·  YV Y-piece
  • MU screw nut  ·  VK cap piece  ·  VER seal plug  ·  FP quick coupling  ·  RE reduction
  • SW spanner  ·  KH ball valve  ·  VB manifold  ·  KU plastic nozzle  ·  GS set

The trailing figures are the size: in 1-DU-32, the 32 is a 3.2 mm outlet. Suffixes carry the variant — PT conical pipe thread, U undercut thread, DK double ball, EK extra short, SS stainless steel, K flexible.
