Peel grinding is a growing market for grinding machine manufacturers, and also for  MIRKA CAFRO R&D department that is analyzing and optimizing continuously how to improve our grinding wheels for OD grinding of carbide rods along with the new grinders. Understanding that the traditional processing consists in a traverse pass after several plunges, and the number of plunges were given by the ratio of the length of the carbide part to be reduced in diameter and of the width of the wheel’s diamond layer. The problem arises if a cylindrical grinder is not available or if, for any reason, the OD grinding has to be carried out in the CNC grinder: in this case roundness and finishing defects often appear. How to solve those problems? MIRKA CAFRO proposes an innovative solution in peel  grinding for all the machines equipped with a high-speed collet chuck running above 3000 rpm with a workpiece diameter of 6mm [1/4"]. Then using a high speed 70 m/s [13,780 SFM], reduces the wheel and workpiece contact area to one point with a grinding pressure equal to zero, with extraordinary feed rates at no pressure and insignificant wheel wear. 

The coolant pressure and filtration must be in optimal conditions to avoid wheel loading and heat buildup. Another important point is that the movement can be linear or a long a profile, then the contact is limited to a single point. However, the Rollomatic CNC Grinder NP5 uses two spindles working in two points: 1.- The roughing wheel, usually is a metal bond with a fine grit D91 [U.S. Mesh D180] and a very high concentration. 2.- On the opposite side of the workpiece, is the finishing, the standard grit MIRKA CAFRO offers is D25 [U.S. Mesh D800], this wheel runs at lower speed in order to get a very fine roughness. Today, other CNC grinder manufacturers such as Anca, Reinecker, Junker, and Studer are offering machines with this application.
