MACHINABILITY OF HASTELLOY C-276 MATERIAL
Hastelloy C276, a trademark of haynes international, is a nickel-based alloy (56% Ni) classified as a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy that possess exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride-bearing solutions.
It is used for components that need extreme corrosion resistance in harsh environments where more conventional materials like stainless 316 are insufficient.
Machining hastelloy is like other nickel-based superalloys with moderate hardness (like Inconel 625, for example). It should be machined with positive and sharp cutting edges. Geometries that are suitable for austenitic stainless steel will also work well on Hastelloy. However, it is better to use geometries and grades that are specially designed for superalloys.
SUMMARY:
For general turning of material hastelloy C-276 at stable conditions use a grade with a very hard substrate and thin PVD coating.
For general milling use a grade with a semi hard substrate and PVD coating.
For detailed carbide grades recommendations, check the table below.
Recommended Cutting speed range for turning at stable conditions is 230 - 300 [SFM] / 70 - 90 [m/min].
Consider using CBN inserts. Although they cost more than twice, they enable increasing the cutting speed by 2-4 times(relative to carbide).
Recommended Cutting speed range for milling with stable clamping and short overhang is 160 - 230 [SFM] / 50 - 70 [m/min]
For detailed cutting speed recommendations, check the table below.
