Inconel 800H (also marketed as Incoloy 800H — the two names cover the identical UNS N08810 material, a naming overlap carried over from the alloy's early trademark history) is a controlled-chemistry, controlled-grain-size version of standard alloy 800 built specifically for elevated-temperature structural service. The chemistry looks almost the same as base 800, but the carbon window is narrowed to 0.05-0.10% — rather than 800's 0.10% ceiling — and the specification requires a coarser grain structure (ASTM grain size No. 5 or larger). Both changes are aimed squarely at improving creep and stress-rupture strength at sustained high temperature, which is what separates a structural furnace component from a component that merely has to survive the heat.
Because it keeps the same iron-nickel-chromium base as 800, with chromium around 19-23% and nickel around 30-35%, 800H retains the family's characteristic cost advantage over solid nickel-base superalloys while delivering meaningfully better long-term performance under load at temperature. It is the alloy of choice for pressure-containing components in high-temperature process piping, reformer and pyrolysis furnace tubing, and other structural parts where 800's standard grain size and carbon range would not provide adequate creep life.

800H also requires a minimum grain size of ASTM No. 5 (coarser than standard 800) to meet its specified creep-rupture properties.
Nickel-iron-chromium superalloys like Inconel 800H are demanding to machine for a consistent set of reasons: low thermal conductivity concentrates the heat generated by the cut right at the tool edge instead of carrying it away in the chip, the alloy work-hardens noticeably wherever a previous pass rubbed instead of cut, and it holds onto its strength at elevated temperature rather than softening the way steel does as the cutting zone heats up. 800H's coarser, controlled grain structure — the same feature that improves its creep resistance in service — can also promote a more pronounced work-hardened layer during machining compared with standard 800, so consistent, positive-engagement cuts matter even more here.
Iron content still dilutes the toughest part of the nickel-chromium matrix, so 800H remains more machinable than a solid nickel-base alloy like Inconel 625 or Hastelloy, but expect behavior close to or slightly more demanding than standard 800 given the narrower carbon window and coarser grain.
Rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, and a coating suited to heat-resistant alloys are essential. Run at moderate-to-low speeds and keep feed rates high enough to consistently cut beneath any work-hardened layer rather than skating across it — light, hesitant passes are where tool life problems on this alloy usually start.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, short tool overhang, and annealed nominal hardness. Reduce further for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or work-hardened stock.
