AISI/SAE 1112 is one of the benchmark resulfurized free-machining steels, and it's often used as the 100% machinability reference point against which other steels are rated. Carbon is low, around 0.07–0.13%, but sulfur is pushed up to 0.16–0.23% — roughly double the level in a mildly resulfurized grade like 1108 — and phosphorus is also elevated to 0.07–0.12%. The sulfur combines with manganese to form a dense population of manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions that act as built-in chip-breakers throughout the microstructure, while the added phosphorus increases the hardness and brittleness of the surrounding ferrite matrix, which further discourages built-up edge and helps chips separate cleanly.
That combination makes 1112 one of the easiest-cutting carbon steels available, which is exactly why it's the classic choice for high-volume screw machine work: small turned parts, fittings, studs, and fasteners produced at high spindle speeds where tool life and cycle time drive the economics. Like other heavily resulfurized grades, the tradeoff for this machinability is reduced transverse ductility, impact toughness, and weldability, so 1112 is reserved for machined components rather than parts that need to be welded or take significant impact loading.

1112's high sulfur content is the main reason it cuts so easily. The manganese sulfide inclusions it forms are soft and act as stress risers directly in the path of the advancing tool edge, so chips shear and fracture into short segments almost automatically instead of dragging into long ribbons the way a plain low-carbon steel would. That translates into dramatically better chip control, lower cutting forces, and less friction at the tool-chip interface, since the inclusions also provide a measure of internal lubrication as they smear across the cutting face.
The elevated phosphorus adds a second machinability lever: it stiffens and embrittles the ferrite matrix slightly, which reduces the material's tendency to smear and build up on the cutting edge — a common problem with soft, low-carbon steels. Combined with the sulfur effect, this is what pushes 1112 to the top of the machinability scale among carbon steels, supporting high spindle speeds, aggressive feeds, and excellent surface finish with minimal tool wear.
The main practical consideration is that 1112 is not intended for structural or welded applications — its high sulfur and phosphorus content that make it so easy to machine also reduce transverse toughness and weldability. It should be treated strictly as a machining-grade steel selected for parts where cutting performance, not mechanical robustness across all directions, is the priority.
