Material Overview

ASTM A570 covers hot-rolled carbon steel sheet and strip for general structural applications — brackets, light framing, formed and fabricated components, and general-purpose parts that don't require the heavier section sizes of a true plate specification. The standard spans six strength grades (30, 33, 36, 40, 45, and 50), with the grade number denoting the minimum yield strength in ksi. Grade 36 is one of the most commonly stocked levels, offering a practical middle ground between the readily formable Grade 30 and the higher-strength Grades 45 and 50.

Because A570 is a sheet-and-strip specification rather than a plate specification, it's typically supplied in thinner gauges and is more often sheared, formed, or stamped than it is turned or milled as bar or block stock. Still, cut lengths and blanks do reach the machine shop for secondary operations — drilling, slotting, edge milling, and finish trimming after forming. The alloy content is kept low (plain carbon-manganese chemistry) to preserve formability and weldability, which also keeps the material easy to machine relative to higher-carbon or heat-treated steels.

Machinability Explained

A570 Grade 36 is a low-carbon, plain carbon-manganese sheet steel, and it machines the way that description suggests: low cutting forces, minimal tool wear, and no work-hardening surprises in normal secondary operations. The bigger practical factor is the material's thin gauge and formed geometry rather than its metallurgy — most shop work on this material is drilling, trimming, or slotting flat or formed sheet rather than heavy stock removal.

Because sheet stock flexes more readily than plate, workholding and support close to the cutting zone matter more here than tool selection. Inadequate backing under a drilled or milled area invites chatter, burring, and dimensional drift even though the material itself offers little resistance to the tool. Sharp, positive-rake tooling reduces the pushing force that causes sheet to deflect, and consistent feed keeps the tool cutting cleanly rather than rubbing and burnishing the thin section.

Chips are short and manageable at this hardness level, and there's no meaningful abrasive wear mechanism to plan around. A general-purpose coated carbide grade suited to mild, low-carbon steel handles A570 Grade 36 without difficulty; the emphasis should be on part support and edge sharpness rather than on selecting a specialized wear-resistant grade.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions on cut lengths or blanks: rigid support directly under the cutting zone, sharp positive tooling, and nominal as-rolled hardness. Reduce speeds and increase workholding support when cutting thin or unsupported sheet sections.
