Material Overview

1070 sits in the 1xxx "commercially pure" series of wrought aluminum, one step purer than 1050. The designation guarantees a minimum of 99.7% aluminum by weight, leaving very little room for anything else — trace iron and silicon are the largest impurities, with copper, manganese, magnesium, and zinc all held to a few hundredths of a percent. That extra purity over 1050 comes at a real cost in strength: 1070 has no alloying elements to work with, so like the rest of the 1xxx family it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment and only firms up through cold working.

The payoff for that near-pure composition is outstanding electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance — properties that improve as the aluminum content edges closer to 100%. 1070 shows up in applications where conducting current or heat efficiently matters more than mechanical strength: electrical bus bars and conductor rail, chemical and food processing equipment, foil stock, and reflective or decorative trim where a bright, easily polished surface is wanted. It is not a structural alloy, and shops shouldn't expect it to hold up under significant load the way an alloyed grade would.

Machinability Explained

1070 carries the "soft equals easy" misconception even further than 1050 — at 99.7% pure aluminum it's about as soft and gummy a material as a machinist will encounter. Low strength and high ductility mean the material resists shearing cleanly; instead it drags, smears, and welds itself onto the cutting edge, producing built-up edge (BUE) that tears the finished surface and can push part dimensions out of tolerance as redeposited material accumulates on the tool.

Success on this alloy depends on sharp, polished, minimally honed cutting edges and aggressive positive rake angles that shear the material rather than plow through it. Cutting speed should stay on the high side of the recommended range rather than the low side — slower speeds give the aluminum more time to stick to the tool, which is the opposite of what a "gentle" approach would suggest. Flood coolant or an air blast helps keep the cutting zone clear and prevents chips from re-welding to the workpiece or insert.

Because 1070 has essentially no alloying content to promote chip segmentation, it produces long, continuous, stringy chips that will wrap around rotating tooling if left unchecked. A chipbreaker geometry suited to non-ferrous materials, combined with feed rates high enough to keep the chip thick enough to fracture, is the standard way to keep chip control manageable through a production run.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, and short tool overhang. Adjust down for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or thin-wall parts prone to deflection or chatter.
