Material Overview

2095 is a high-copper aluminum-lithium alloy closely related to 2094, carrying 3.90-4.60% copper and 0.70-1.40% lithium along with modest magnesium and manganese additions. Copper at this level drives a strong age-hardening response for high static strength, while the lithium content delivers the density and stiffness benefits characteristic of the whole Al-Li family: each percent of lithium added by weight reduces density by roughly 3% and raises elastic modulus by roughly 6% versus conventional aluminum. The combination gives 2095 a strength profile aimed at demanding structural roles rather than general-purpose fabrication.

Like the other high-copper members of this family, 2095 belongs to the broader group of Al-Li alloys developed for aerospace and high-performance structural applications where the combination of high strength and reduced weight matters more than cost or ease of sourcing. Machinability Explained

2095's composition sits between the lower-copper and highest-copper members of this alloy family, and it machines accordingly: solid chip formation from the copper content combined with the extra reactivity that lithium brings to the cutting edge. That reactivity increases the tendency for material to build up on the tool face at low speeds or with a dull edge, so a sharp, polished insert and a coating suited to non-ferrous work help maintain a clean cut. Consistent coolant or lubrication also helps manage heat and reduces edge pickup.

As with the other high-strength grades in this family, cutting forces on 2095 run a bit higher than on lower-copper Al-Li alloys, so rigid workholding and controlled chip evacuation matter more here. 2095 is typically machined in thin, precision aerospace sections, where managing cutting force and localized heat is important for holding tight dimensional tolerances.

Despite the added strength and reactivity, 2095 still cuts well above steel or titanium speeds thanks to aluminum's low shear strength and high thermal conductivity. A sharp edge run at the recommended speed range consistently outperforms a slower, more hesitant approach.
