2097 is a moderate-copper, higher-lithium alloy from the aluminum-lithium 2xxx family, with 2.50-3.10% copper and 1.20-1.80% lithium supported by small manganese, magnesium, zinc, and titanium additions. The lithium content sits toward the higher end of the FM Carbide Al-Li lineup, which pushes the density and stiffness benefits further than lower-lithium grades in the family: each percent of lithium added by weight lowers density by roughly 3% and raises elastic modulus by roughly 6% relative to conventional aluminum. That balance of moderate copper and elevated lithium gives 2097 a strength and weight profile distinct from both the highest-copper grades and the earliest-generation Al-Li alloys in this lineup.

Like the rest of the family, 2097 belongs to the broader class of copper-lithium aluminum alloys developed for aerospace structural use, where the combination of reduced density and increased stiffness translates directly into airframe weight savings. Machinability Explained

2097's higher lithium content makes it more chemically reactive at the cutting edge than lower-lithium aluminum alloys, increasing the risk of built-up edge if the insert isn't sharp or the cutting speed is too conservative. A polished, positive-rake edge and a coating suited to non-ferrous machining help keep the cut clean, and steady coolant or lubrication reduces both the reactivity at the tool face and the heat generated during the cut.

As with every Al-Li alloy in this family, chip control needs active management: aluminum naturally forms long, continuous chips, so chipbreaker geometry and cutting parameters need to be dialed in rather than left to chance. Because 2097 stock is typically machined into thin aerospace sheet, plate, or extrusion sections, controlling cutting force and heat buildup is essential for holding tight dimensional tolerances and avoiding part distortion.

Even with the added reactivity from lithium, 2097 still cuts at speeds well above steel or titanium given aluminum's low shear strength and high thermal conductivity. Running the recommended speed range with a sharp, well-maintained edge produces a cleaner result than slowing down, which tends to encourage edge buildup rather than avoid it.
