5052 is the workhorse of the aluminum-magnesium family — the alloy most shops reach for by default when a job calls for "5xxx sheet." With magnesium in the 2.2–2.8% range, it carries roughly twice the alloying content of a low-Mg grade like 5005, and a small chromium addition (0.15–0.35%) helps control grain structure and improve stress-corrosion resistance. Like every 5xxx alloy, it isn't heat-treatable: strength comes entirely from magnesium in solid solution plus whatever cold work is applied, so 5052 is supplied in O through H38-type strain-hardened tempers rather than a solution-treated condition.
That moderate magnesium level gives 5052 a strength level clearly above the low-Mg grades while retaining excellent formability — it's one of the most bendable and deep-drawable aluminum alloys available, which is a big part of why it's the default choice for fuel tanks, tank truck and marine bulkheads, appliance panels, electronic chassis, and general sheet metal fabrication. Corrosion resistance, especially in marine and saltwater exposure, is very good, and weldability is excellent using standard 5xxx filler alloys. It sits squarely in the middle of the 5xxx strength range: less alloyed than structural grades like 5083 or 5086, but stronger and less soft than 5005 or 3105.

5052's 2.2–2.8% magnesium content puts it a step up in cutting difficulty from the low-Mg 5xxx grades, but it still machines well by any general engineering standard. The added magnesium in solid solution raises cutting forces slightly and gives the chip a bit more toughness, which means it can feel a little "stickier" or gummier at the cutting edge compared to something like 3105 or 5005 — though nowhere near as pronounced as the higher-Mg grades like 5056 or 5083.
Built-up edge is still the primary concern, and the fix is the same one that applies across non-heat-treatable wrought aluminum: sharp, positive-rake, polished tooling run at a confident cutting speed. Backing off the speed to "be gentle" on soft aluminum is counterproductive — slower cuts give the material more time to smear and weld to the edge rather than shear cleanly away. Chromium's grain-refining effect helps keep the microstructure fine and consistent, which supports a more uniform, predictable surface finish than coarser-grained alloys.
Chip control matters more on 5052 than on the softer 3xxx and low-Mg 5xxx grades, since the tougher chip is less inclined to break on its own. Standard aluminum chipbreaker geometry and reliable chip evacuation — coolant flood or air blast — keep long stringy chips from wrapping tooling or marking finished surfaces.
