5657 is an unusual member of the Al-Mg family: instead of chasing strength, it's built around exceptional purity. Starting from a base of at least 99.85% aluminum, it takes only a small magnesium addition (0.6-1.0%) for a modest strength lift, while every other element — silicon, iron, copper, manganese — is held to trace levels far below what's allowed in ordinary 5xxx sheet alloys. That combination of very low iron and silicon is what makes 5657 valuable: those two elements are the biggest culprits behind dull, mottled, or inconsistent anodized finishes, so removing them almost entirely gives this alloy an unusually bright, uniform response to chemical or electrochemical brightening.
As a result, 5657 is used almost exclusively where appearance is the priority rather than mechanical strength — bright anodized and polished automotive and appliance trim, reflectors, and decorative architectural details. It is non-heat-treatable, like the rest of the 5xxx series, and its strength is modest even by Al-Mg standards, so it is rarely specified for structural or load-bearing work. Its value is almost entirely in surface finish.

5657's exceptional purity, the same property that gives it its bright anodized finish, works against it at the machine. With almost no alloying content beyond a touch of magnesium, it behaves close to commercially pure aluminum: very soft, very ductile, and strongly inclined to smear, drag, and build up on the cutting edge rather than shear into a clean chip. Of all the alloys in the Al-Mg family, purity grades like 5657 are among the least forgiving to machine cleanly, even though the material itself offers essentially no resistance to cutting.
High cutting speeds, razor-sharp and highly polished positive-rake tooling, and generous coolant or air blast are all necessary just to get an acceptable finish — dull or lightly-worn inserts will tear the surface almost immediately. Because 5657 is chosen specifically for its cosmetic anodized or polished appearance, any machining marks, smearing, or built-up-edge tearing are far more visible and consequential than they would be on a structural aluminum part, so tool condition and finishing technique matter more here than the raw cutting parameters.
Given its niche use in trim and decorative parts, 5657 is more often finish-machined, polished, or trimmed to size than heavily roughed out, and light finishing passes with fresh, sharp tooling are the norm.
