Material Overview

6070 is a higher-strength member of the 6xxx (aluminum-magnesium-silicon) family, formulated with noticeably more of every major alloying element than the common extrusion grade 6063. Silicon runs 1.0-1.7%, magnesium 0.50-1.2%, manganese 0.40-1.0%, and copper 0.15-0.40% — all well above 6063's levels and broadly comparable to, or exceeding, 6061. That heavier alloying gives 6070 more Mg2Si available for age-hardening plus a manganese and copper contribution to strength, putting its mechanical properties in the upper range of the 6xxx series.

Like every 6xxx alloy, 6070 is age-hardenable, weldable, and corrosion-resistant, and it retains good extrudability even with its heavier alloy load — though not to the same effortless degree as 6063. That combination makes it a candidate for structural extrusions and machined components that need more strength than 6063 or standard 6061 can offer without stepping up to a more specialized, harder-to-process alloy. It is less commonly stocked than 6061 or 6063, so availability and lead time are worth checking before specifying it for a project.

Machinability Explained

6070 machines like a higher-alloy cousin of 6061: the Mg2Si precipitate structure still promotes reasonably clean chip formation compared with the gummier 5xxx grades, and the added manganese and copper give it a bit more body under the tool, which helps chip control but also raises cutting forces somewhat versus lighter-alloyed 6xxx grades like 6063.

Good tool life and predictable chip formation are typical, and the alloy responds well to the same fundamentals that work across the 6xxx family: sharp, positive-rake tooling, high cutting speeds relative to steel, and attention to chip evacuation to prevent long chips from wrapping around the tool or part. Because 6070 carries more alloying content than 6063, built-up edge is somewhat less of a concern, but polished, sharp inserts still produce a noticeably better finish than worn ones.

As with other higher-strength 6xxx alloys, temper condition has a real effect on machinability — fully aged (T6-type) material cuts with better chip control and dimensional stability than solution-treated or naturally aged stock, so confirming temper before setting parameters is worthwhile.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, and short tool overhang. Adjust down for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or thin-wall parts prone to deflection or chatter.
