Material Overview

6463 is a 6xxx-series (aluminum-magnesium-silicon) wrought alloy that's chemically very close to 6063, but formulated with noticeably tighter limits on iron and other trace elements. That tighter chemistry is the whole point of the alloy: iron and similar impurities are what dull an aluminum surface's response to polishing and anodizing, so keeping them low gives 6463 an unusually bright, clean finish once it's buffed and anodized — something standard 6063 can't fully match.

Because that bright finish is the alloy's defining feature, 6463 is produced almost exclusively as extrusions and is rarely seen in other mill forms. It's the material of choice for bright decorative trim: automotive and appliance trim strips, architectural moldings, furniture edging, and any extruded part where the customer will see a highly polished or brilliantly anodized surface. Mechanically, it performs much like 6063 — moderate heat-treated strength, good corrosion resistance, and easy extrudability — so the low-iron chemistry is a cosmetic upgrade layered on a familiar structural base, not a different alloy family altogether.

6463 does not have a widely verified DIN Werkstoffnummer equivalent independent of the EN AW-6463 designation above — treat any 3.3xxx number attributed to 6463 with caution, as it is easily confused with the similarly-named but chemically distinct EN AW-6060 (AlMgSi0.5, Wnr. 3.3206).

The low iron (0.15% max) and manganese (0.05% max) ceilings are what separate 6463 from standard 6063 — both elements are held far tighter here than in general-purpose 6xxx grades to preserve polishability and anodizing brightness.

Machinability Explained

6463 machines essentially like its close relative 6063: it's a soft, low-alloy 6xxx grade that shears easily, conducts heat away from the cutting edge quickly, and tolerates high surface speeds with light cutting forces. Nothing about the low-iron, low-manganese chemistry that gives 6463 its bright finish changes the fundamentals of how it responds to a cutting tool — the extra purity affects surface appearance and polish response, not hardness or cutting forces.

Where 6463 does deserve extra care is downstream of the cut: because so many 6463 parts are destined for polishing, buffing, and bright anodizing, tool marks, chatter, and built-up-edge smearing that would be cosmetically acceptable on a structural 6061 part become real defects here, since they telegraph straight through the anodized surface. Sharp, polished, positive-rake tooling run at proper speed — not backed off — is the standard defense against built-up edge and the poor finish it causes.

Chip control follows the same pattern as other 6xxx alloys: expect long, stringy chips that need a chipbreaker suited to aluminum, with coolant or air blast to keep chips from marking the finished surface before it ever reaches the polishing line.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, and short tool overhang. Adjust down for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or thin-wall parts prone to deflection or chatter.
