Material Overview
7022 is a high-strength, heat-treatable wrought aluminum alloy from the 7xxx (Al-Zn-Mg-Cu) family, sharing the zinc-driven strengthening mechanism that made 7075 the benchmark high-strength aluminum grade. Where 7022 sets itself apart is a leaner copper addition, roughly half to two-thirds the copper level of 7075, paired with a wider magnesium window. That balance trades a bit of peak static strength for friendlier fabrication behavior, which is why 7022 built its reputation in welded structural work and mould/toolmaking rather than riveted aerospace airframes.
In T6-type tempers, 7022 reaches tensile strengths in roughly the 490-540 MPa range: below 7075, but comfortably above general-purpose 6xxx alloys, making it a practical middle ground for parts that need real structural strength along with more workable fabrication than the highest-alloyed 7xxx grades allow. It shows up in tooling blocks, structural weldments, motorsport and bicycle-frame components, and machined parts where the added cost and reduced corrosion resistance of the 7xxx family are justified by the strength gain. As with its siblings, 7022 is normally machined from pre-hardened bar or plate, so the cutting tool is working the alloy in its already-strengthened, higher-hardness state rather than a soft, pre-heat-treatment condition.

Machinability Explained
7022 cuts the way most heat-treated 7xxx alloys do: fast and clean by the standards of engineering metals, but with more bite than a soft 6xxx grade. Aluminum's high thermal conductivity still carries heat out of the cutting zone efficiently, and the material shears easily compared with steel, so high surface speeds remain the norm. The added zinc, magnesium, and copper raise cutting forces and abrasive tool wear compared with 6061, though 7022's lighter copper content keeps it slightly less demanding on tooling than 7075 or the more heavily alloyed 7xxx grades.
Built-up edge is the main quality risk on any 7xxx alloy, and 7022 is no exception: at low speeds or with a dull, poorly finished edge, the material tends to smear rather than shear cleanly, leaving a rough finish and inconsistent dimensions. Sharp, polished, positive-rake tooling is the standard fix, and running the tool faster rather than slower usually improves finish quality on this alloy family. Because 7022 is typically supplied and machined in a pre-hardened T6-type temper, tool wear will track closer to 7075 than to annealed 6061 stock.
Chip control matters as much as raw speed. 7022 forms long, continuous chips that need a chipbreaker geometry suited to aluminum, or they will wrap around the tool or workpiece and cause finish and safety issues. Good coolant or air-blast chip evacuation, rigid workholding, and short tool overhang all pay off more on this alloy than the raw cutting-speed numbers suggest.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, and short tool overhang. Adjust down for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or thin-wall parts prone to deflection or chatter.
