Aluminum 7178

UNS A97178 EN AW AlZn7MgCu Temper T6

Material Overview

7178 pushes the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu chemistry further than any other standard 7xxx alloy, carrying more zinc, magnesium, and copper than 7075. That heavier alloying load is a deliberate trade: 7178 gives up corrosion resistance, weldability, and fracture toughness in exchange for the highest static tensile strength available in a mainstream aluminum grade. In its solution-treated and artificially aged T6-type tempers, 7178 reaches tensile strengths that exceed standard 7075-T6, making it the alloy of choice when raw strength-per-pound outweighs every other consideration.

Because of its strength-first profile and the corrosion and toughness compromises that come with it, 7178 sees comparatively narrow use: high-load fittings, some legacy aircraft skins and structural members, and specialty components where the part is protected from environmental exposure or where the strength advantage justifies extra corrosion protection measures. It is less common today than 7075 or 7050, both of which offer better all-around property balance, but it remains a relevant alloy anywhere maximum static strength is the deciding factor. Like other high-alloy 7xxx grades, 7178 is machined almost exclusively from pre-hardened stock, so the shop is always cutting the alloy in its full-strength condition.

Machinability Explained

7178 is the most heavily alloyed of the standard 7xxx grades, and it machines that way: the highest cutting forces and the most abrasive tool wear of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu family, though still far below what steel or titanium demand. Aluminum's fundamental machining advantages still apply here: the material shears easily and conducts heat away from the cutting edge efficiently, so high surface speeds remain appropriate. But 7178's extra zinc, magnesium, and copper content, combined with its typically full-hard T6-type temper, mean tool life will run shorter than on 7075 or 7050 at equivalent cutting parameters.

Built-up edge remains the primary finish risk, and given 7178's higher alloy content, a dull or poorly polished edge will show its effects faster than on a milder 7xxx grade. Sharp, positive-rake, polished tooling is essential, and shops running 7178 regularly often plan for more frequent insert changes than they would on 7075. Because the alloy is typically used for smaller, high-load fittings rather than large structural stock, part rigidity is less often the limiting factor than tool wear and finish quality.

Chip control follows the standard aluminum pattern: long, continuous chips need chipbreaker geometry suited to the material, and reliable chip evacuation protects both surface finish and tool life over a production run.

Recommended Cutting Speeds

Operation Vc (m/min) Vc (SFM)
Turning 380 – 620 1250 – 2030
Milling 470 – 780 1540 – 2560
Parting 250 – 415 820 – 1360
Grooving 315 – 520 1030 – 1710
Drilling 155 – 260 510 – 850

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, and short tool overhang. Adjust down for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or thin-wall parts prone to deflection or chatter.
