8017 belongs to a small, purpose-built corner of the aluminum family: the 8xxx series, designed for electrical conductor wire rather than structural or aerospace duty. Instead of the strength-focused zinc, copper, or magnesium alloying used in 6xxx or 7xxx grades, 8017 relies on a modest iron addition, roughly three-quarters of a percent, added to otherwise near-pure aluminum. Iron in this small quantity raises tensile and creep strength meaningfully without materially hurting electrical conductivity, which is the one property this alloy exists to protect.
That combination, noticeably higher strength than commercially pure 1350 electrical-grade aluminum with only a small conductivity penalty, is why 8017 became a standard choice for building wire, overhead conductor strand, and other electrical applications where the conductor needs to survive handling, thermal cycling, and sustained tension without excessive creep or sag. It is normally supplied and used in soft, annealed or intermediate wire tempers rather than a precipitation-hardened condition, since 8017's strength comes mainly from iron-rich second-phase particles and cold work introduced during wire drawing rather than from solution heat treatment and aging. Machined parts made from 8017 bar are far less common than drawn wire or rod, but where the alloy is machined, it behaves as a soft, easy-cutting aluminum.

8017 is one of the softest, cleanest-cutting aluminum alloys a shop is likely to encounter, precisely because it was never designed to be strong: it is essentially high-purity aluminum with just enough iron added to hold its shape as wire under tension. Cutting forces are very low, the material shears with minimal resistance, and aluminum's high thermal conductivity keeps the cutting zone cool even at aggressive speeds. Because 8017 is normally supplied dead soft or in a light intermediate temper rather than precipitation-hardened, it lacks the abrasive intermetallic particles that make higher-alloy 7xxx grades harder on tooling.
The main challenge with very soft, high-purity aluminum like 8017 is not tool wear but finish and dimensional control: the material is prone to built-up edge and can drag or smear rather than shear cleanly if the tool is dull, has a low rake angle, or lacks a polished face. Sharp, positive-rake, well-polished tooling is essential, and running at higher rather than lower speeds generally improves surface finish on soft aluminum like this. Because 8017 is rarely machined from bulk stock in practice, most shops encounter it only when turning or facing rod or bar for connector fittings, terminals, or similar electrical hardware.
Chip control still matters. Soft, ductile aluminum tends to form long, stringy chips that can wrap around the tool or workpiece if chipbreaker geometry is not suited to the material, so chip management deserves the same attention here as on any other aluminum grade.
