Duplex 2102 (UNS S82011) is a lean duplex stainless steel built around roughly 21.5% chromium, 1.5% nickel, and an elevated manganese content near 2.8% — manganese is used here partly in place of nickel to help stabilize the austenite phase economically. Like every duplex grade, its microstructure splits close to evenly between austenite and ferrite, and that split is what gives 2102 mechanical and corrosion properties that don't fit neatly into the austenitic stainless world: yield strength runs more than double a conventional 300-series grade, and the ferrite phase brings a level of resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking that austenitic grades simply don't have.
What separates 2102 from the standard and super duplex grades is how little molybdenum it carries — low enough that it sits toward the leaner end of the duplex spectrum, with corrosion resistance that lands around Type 316L in general service and a critical pitting temperature slightly above 316L's. That reduced alloy content also makes 2102 noticeably less prone to forming brittle intermetallic phases during welding or elevated-temperature service than higher-alloyed duplex grades like 2205. It's aimed at tubing, storage tanks, heat exchangers, and structural or architectural applications where 316L-level corrosion resistance is acceptable but the higher strength and stress-corrosion-cracking resistance of a duplex structure are worth the switch.

2102 is a proprietary lean duplex composition marketed under names such as ATI 2102®; it is not currently listed under a EN/Werkstoffnummer designation.
| Element | Content |
|---|---|
| Chromium (Cr) | 20.5 – 23.0% |
| Nickel (Ni) | 1.00 – 2.00% |
| Manganese (Mn) | 2.00 – 4.00% |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.10 – 1.00% |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.15 – 0.27% |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.10 – 1.00% |
| Silicon (Si) | 1.00% max |
| Carbon (C) | 0.030% max |
Estimated PREN (Cr + 3.3×Mo + 16×N) is approximately 25-27, in the lean duplex range and comparable to 316L-class corrosion resistance.
2102 machines with the general character common to lean duplex grades: cutting forces sit noticeably above a comparable austenitic stainless because the ferrite phase resists deformation more stubbornly than austenite does, but the tendency to work-harden under a rubbing edge — the defining headache with 304 and 316 — is much less pronounced. That trade-off changes how a shop should approach the cut. Instead of worrying primarily about surface hardening from light or hesitant passes, the priority shifts toward managing heat and mechanical load at the cutting edge.
Because 2102 carries relatively little molybdenum compared with standard or super duplex grades, it's somewhat less abrasive on tooling than 2205 or 255, but it's still meaningfully tougher on an insert than 316L. A rigid setup with minimal overhang helps keep the higher cutting forces from translating into vibration, which is the fastest way to chip a duplex-rated edge. Chip control tends to be more predictable than on austenitic grades because the ferrite content promotes shorter chip curls, and adequate coolant flow remains important for controlling the heat concentrated at the tool-workpiece interface during continuous cuts.
| Operation | Vc (m/min) | Vc (SFM) |
|---|---|---|
| Turning | 120 – 160 | 395 – 525 |
| Milling | 75 – 100 | 245 – 330 |

| Grooving | 65 – 85 | 210 – 280 |

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, short tool overhang, and adequate coolant. Reduce speeds for interrupted cuts or thin-wall parts prone to deflection.
