Material Overview
Hastelloy is Haynes International's trademarked family of nickel-based corrosion-resistant superalloys, developed for chemical environments aggressive enough to attack standard stainless steels — strong acids, chlorides, and both oxidizing and reducing media used across chemical processing, pollution control, and pharmaceutical equipment. Hastelloy C-4 is a C-family alloy built around roughly 14-18% chromium and 14-17% molybdenum on a nickel base, giving it the same broad oxidizing/reducing corrosion resistance that defines the C-family, while a tighter overall chemistry — including a titanium addition and lower iron and tungsten content than C-276 — improves its structural stability at elevated temperature.
That improved thermal stability is C-4's real distinguishing trait: it resists the precipitation of secondary phases during prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures far better than the earlier C-family grades, which makes it a strong choice for equipment that operates hot as well as corrosive — process piping and vessels that see both aggressive chemistry and sustained thermal cycling. It also welds cleanly with excellent resistance to intergranular attack in the heat-affected zone, making it a practical option for fabricated components in chemical processing and flue-gas desulfurization equipment.

Machinability Explained
Hastelloy C-4 machines with the same fundamental challenges as the rest of the C-family. Very low thermal conductivity means heat from the cut stays concentrated at the cutting edge instead of clearing out with the chip, so tool temperatures climb quickly even at cutting speeds that would be conservative on steel. The alloy work-hardens under light or dwelling cuts, leaving a hardened skin behind the tool that resists the next pass — feed rates need to stay high enough to consistently cut beneath that layer rather than riding across it.
C-4 also has a strong tendency to gall and weld to the cutting edge instead of shearing cleanly, which shows up as built-up edge and accelerated flank wear if the tool geometry and coating aren't well matched to the material. A rigid, low-deflection setup, sharp positive-rake carbide geometry to hold cutting forces down, and a coating chosen for hot hardness and resistance to adhesion rather than pure abrasion resistance all make a measurable difference in tool life. Cutting speeds should stay low to moderate compared with steel, and a steady, adequate chip load — rather than light finishing passes — keeps the cut productive and limits work-hardening between passes.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, short tool overhang, and nominal material hardness. Adjust down for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or harder-than-nominal stock.
