Inconel is Special Metals' trademarked family of nickel-chromium-based superalloys, renowned for retaining strength and resisting corrosion and oxidation at extreme temperatures where most other metals fail — which is why the family is used extensively in jet engines, gas turbines, and chemical processing equipment. Inconel 601 takes the classic nickel-chromium-iron chemistry of Inconel 600 and adds roughly 1-1.7% aluminum, specifically to form a more protective, more adherent oxide scale at high temperature.
That aluminum addition extends 601's usable oxidation-resistant service temperature well beyond what 600 can handle, making it a common choice for furnace muffles, radiant tubes, thermal-processing fixtures, and other components that see prolonged exposure above 2000°F (1095°C) in cyclic or continuous service. The higher chromium content (21-25% versus 14-17% in 600) further reinforces that oxidation resistance and also improves resistance to a broader range of corrosive high-temperature atmospheres.
Like 600, 601 is solid-solution strengthened rather than precipitation-hardened, so its as-supplied strength and machining behavior stay comparatively consistent and predictable across heats. It's a common upgrade path from 600 whenever a design calls for meaningfully better resistance to scaling and oxide spallation at sustained high temperature.

601 machines much like its close relative Inconel 600, since it shares the same solid-solution nickel-chromium-iron base and only adds a modest amount of aluminum for oxidation resistance. That means the same fundamental challenges apply: low thermal conductivity concentrates cutting heat right at the tool tip instead of letting the chip carry it away, which drives up edge temperature and accelerates diffusion and notch wear.
The alloy work-hardens under cutting pressure, so light cuts, dull edges, or too much dwell time all leave a hardened surface layer that resists the next pass. It also holds onto much of its room-temperature strength even as the cutting zone heats up, unlike carbon steel, which softens noticeably under the same conditions — so the tool never gets help from thermal softening the way it does cutting steel. Combined with a real tendency toward galling and adhesion at the cutting edge, these effects push cutting forces and tool wear well above what a similarly sized steel part would produce.
Sharp, positive-rake geometries, rigid tool and work-holding to minimize vibration, and steady, consistent feed rates that keep the edge engaged rather than rubbing all help manage wear and finish quality. As a solid-solution alloy, 601 remains more machinable than precipitation-hardened Inconel grades like 718 or X-750, but it still needs tooling and cutting parameters chosen specifically for nickel superalloys rather than steel.
