Inconel is Special Metals' trademarked family of nickel-chromium-based superalloys, developed to retain strength and resist corrosion and oxidation at temperatures where most other metals fail, which is why the family is used extensively in jet engines, gas turbines, and high-temperature industrial equipment. Inconel 603XL pushes the oxidation-resistance concept behind Inconel 601 even further: it's a nickel-chromium-aluminum alloy with chromium and aluminum both raised well above 601's levels, purpose-built for the most severe continuous high-temperature oxidizing service in the Inconel catalog.
The higher aluminum content promotes a thicker, more stable alumina-based protective oxide scale than 601 can form, extending usable service life in furnace and thermal-processing environments running above 2000°F (1095°C) and into the 2200°F+ (1200°C+) range where many other nickel alloys would oxidize rapidly. That makes it a specialty choice for furnace muffles, radiant tubes, heat-treating baskets and fixtures, and similar equipment exposed to the harshest sustained thermal cycling.

603XL's higher chromium and aluminum content — the same additions that give it exceptional oxidation resistance — also make it one of the more demanding grades in the Inconel catalog to machine. Like every nickel-based superalloy, it suffers from low thermal conductivity, so cutting heat concentrates at the tool tip instead of clearing out through the chip, driving up edge temperature and accelerating diffusion and notch wear on the insert.
The higher alloy content also increases work-hardening tendency compared with plain 600 or 601: a dull edge, light feed, or excessive dwell leaves a harder skin at the surface that the next pass then has to cut through, compounding wear if the cutting plan doesn't account for it. The alloy retains a large share of its room-temperature strength at elevated cutting-zone temperatures rather than softening the way steel does, so the tool gets no thermal-softening assistance during the cut, and galling/adhesion at the cutting edge remains a real risk with dull or poorly finished tooling.
Sharp, positive cutting geometries, rigid low-vibration setups, and steady feed rates that keep the tool cutting rather than rubbing all help control wear and surface finish. Given its higher alloy content, 603XL generally runs at the more conservative end of the speed and feed ranges used across the 600-family Inconel grades, and coated carbide with good hot hardness is strongly preferred over uncoated tooling for anything beyond light finishing passes.
