Inconel 718 DA is the direct-aged process variant of standard Inconel 718 (UNS N07718) - the most widely used nickel-based superalloy in industry, built around a niobium-and-titanium precipitation-hardening system in a nickel-chromium-iron matrix. "DA" refers to the heat-treatment route, not a different alloy: instead of the conventional full solution treatment followed by aging, direct-aged material is aged directly from the hot-worked or forged condition. Skipping the high-temperature solution anneal suppresses grain growth and produces a finer, more uniform grain structure, which raises yield strength and improves low-cycle fatigue life relative to conventionally solution-treated-and-aged (STA) 718.
This processing route is used specifically for highly stressed rotating components such as turbine disks and rotor hardware, where the finer grain size and higher strength are worth the tighter forging-process control that direct aging demands. Because the chemistry is unchanged from standard 718, the composition table below is identical to the base alloy - what differs is hardness and strength, which run somewhat higher than standard STA 718 and shift the machining parameters accordingly.

Inconel 718 DA machines like standard 718 in every fundamental respect - low thermal conductivity concentrates heat at the cutting edge, the alloy work-hardens aggressively under mechanical and thermal stress, it retains strength and hardness at elevated temperature rather than softening like steel, and it is prone to galling and built-up edge against common tool materials. What changes with the direct-aged condition is degree: the finer grain structure and typically higher hardness (often in the 43-44 HRC range versus roughly 42 HRC for standard STA 718) intensify tool wear and make the work-hardening problem slightly less forgiving.
Because the material is somewhat harder and stronger, cutting speeds should sit at the lower end of the standard-718 range or below it, and feed rates need to stay high enough to consistently cut beneath the previous pass's work-hardened layer. Rigid, vibration-free setups, sharp positive-rake carbide with a wear-resistant coating, and generous coolant delivery remain the standard countermeasures, applied with slightly more conservative parameters than on standard 718.
