Inconel C-276 shares its base chemistry with the equally well-known Hastelloy C-276 — both are produced to the same UNS N10276 nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten specification, since "Inconel" and "Hastelloy" are competing brand names from different producers drawing on the same corrosion-resistant metallurgical family rather than two distinct alloys. The chemistry centers on nickel as the matrix with roughly 15.5% chromium, 16% molybdenum, and 3.5% tungsten, held to an unusually low carbon content (around 0.01%) specifically to avoid the grain-boundary carbide precipitation that can sensitize nickel-chromium-moly alloys during welding.
That combination of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten gives C-276 exceptionally broad corrosion resistance — it holds up in both oxidizing and reducing environments, resists pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing media, and tolerates wet chlorine, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and other aggressive process chemicals better than almost any other commercially available alloy. That versatility is exactly why it shows up across chemical processing, flue-gas desulfurization, pollution control, pulp and paper bleaching, and oil and gas sour-service equipment — anywhere a single alloy needs to handle a wide, sometimes-unpredictable range of corrosive conditions rather than one specific chemical.

Inconel/Hastelloy C-276 is a genuinely difficult alloy to machine, and unlike many nickel superalloys where gamma-prime precipitates drive the difficulty, here it's the high molybdenum and tungsten content in solid solution that does the damage — these heavy alloying elements raise cutting forces and abrasive wear on the tool without the alloy actually being all that hard by conventional hardness scales. That mismatch between moderate bulk hardness and high cutting resistance often surprises shops that haven't run it before.
Like other nickel-chromium alloys, C-276 work-hardens aggressively under light cuts or a dulling edge, and its low thermal conductivity keeps heat concentrated at the cutting edge instead of carrying it off in the chip. Chips tend to be tough, continuous, and prone to built-up edge, especially at lower cutting speeds where the material has more time to smear and adhere to the rake face rather than shear cleanly. Once work hardening sets in, subsequent passes generate even more heat and wear, so consistency of engagement matters more here than on many other materials.
Reliable results come from rigid, deflection-free setups, sharp positive-rake edges that avoid rubbing, coated carbide grades with strong hot hardness, and steady feed rates that keep the tool engaged in fresh material rather than skating over a hardened surface. Coolant plays a bigger role than usual too, both for heat removal and for flushing the tough chips clear of the cutting zone.
