Nimonic PE16 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium alloy, distinct from the more heavily nickel-loaded Nimonic grades in that iron makes up a substantial share of its base — roughly 34-38% — alongside about 15.5-17.5% chromium. A molybdenum addition of 2.8-3.8% provides solid-solution strengthening, while modest titanium and aluminum levels (around 1.1-1.3% each) give the alloy a controlled, moderate age-hardening response rather than the aggressive strengthening seen in higher-titanium, higher-aluminum superalloys.
That moderate approach to strengthening is deliberate: PE16 is prized less for peak strength and more for a well-rounded balance of hot-working, cold-working, and welding characteristics that heavier gamma-prime alloys struggle to match. It holds useful strength and oxidation resistance to around 750°C (1380°F), which is enough for many gas-turbine components without pushing into the fabrication difficulty of the highest-strength disc alloys. It has also seen long-standing use in nuclear reactor components, where its combination of moderate strength, good fabricability, and predictable long-term behavior under thermal and neutron exposure has made it a trusted choice for decades.

Nimonic PE16's moderate age-hardening response makes it somewhat more forgiving to machine than the most heavily precipitation-strengthened Nimonic grades, but it still shares the core challenges of the family. Low thermal conductivity concentrates cutting heat at the tool edge instead of carrying it off in the chip, so edge temperatures rise faster than the cutting speed alone would suggest. The alloy's substantial iron content changes chip behavior somewhat compared with more heavily nickel-loaded grades, but it doesn't eliminate the tendency toward built-up edge and adhesion that characterizes this whole alloy family.
Work-hardening still needs active management: light or dwelling cuts burnish the surface and leave a resistant layer for the next pass to fight through, so feed rates should stay high enough to consistently bite into unworked material. Because PE16's strengthening precipitates are less aggressive than in higher-titanium, higher-aluminum grades, cutting forces and edge temperatures run somewhat lower than on the hardest disc alloys, but rigid setups, sharp positive-rake geometry, and coatings chosen for hot hardness and adhesion resistance remain the right approach for getting consistent tool life and finish.
