Material Overview
15-7PH is a semi-austenitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel, meaning it behaves differently from straightforward martensitic PH grades like 15-5PH or 17-4PH. As solution-annealed, it is essentially austenitic and non-magnetic, similar in structure to a 300-series stainless. To reach its hardened condition, it first has to be conditioned — either by a controlled thermal treatment or by cold working — to trigger a transformation to martensite, after which a final aluminum-driven aging step precipitates the fine intermetallic particles that deliver its high strength. This two-stage path is what earns it the "semi-austenitic" label.
Chemically, 15-7PH is closely related to 17-7PH but adds 2-3% molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting and general corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments. That combination of high strength, good fatigue performance, and better corrosion resistance than 17-7PH makes it a common choice for aerospace springs, diaphragms, bellows, and fasteners that see both cyclic loading and a mildly corrosive service environment. Because its properties depend so heavily on which processing stage it's in, parts are almost always machined in the solution-annealed (Condition A) state, before any conditioning or aging treatment is applied.

Machinability Explained
Because 15-7PH is austenitic in its solution-annealed, most-machinable state, it machines much more like a 300-series stainless than like a straightforward martensitic PH grade. That means the dominant challenge is work hardening rather than abrasive wear: a tool that rubs instead of shearing cleanly leaves a hardened skin behind that fights the next pass, and low thermal conductivity concentrates cutting heat right at the edge instead of carrying it away in the chip. Sharp, positive-rake inserts and feeds aggressive enough to get under the previous pass's hardened layer are the standard countermeasures, the same as they would be on 301 or 304.
The 2-3% molybdenum addition adds a bit more abrasive wear on top of that work-hardening tendency compared with a plain 300-series grade, so tool life planning should account for both mechanisms rather than just one. Chip control also deserves attention, since the austenitic matrix tends toward long, stringy chips if the chipbreaker geometry isn't matched to the cut. Coolant helps on both fronts — pulling heat from the cutting zone and helping evacuate chips before they can tangle or re-cut. Once conditioned and aged to its final martensitic strength, the material cuts more like a hardened tool steel, so bulk machining should always happen before that transformation.

Speeds assume the material is in the solution-annealed (Condition A) state, with a well-matched insert grade, rigid setup, and adequate coolant. Reduce speeds substantially for conditioned or aged stock, interrupted cuts, or thin, deflection-prone sections.
