Material Overview

ASTM A204 covers molybdenum-alloyed carbon steel plate intended for welded pressure vessels operating at moderately elevated temperatures. Unlike the pipe and forged-fitting specifications in this reference library, A204 is a plate steel — it shows up as boiler drum shells, pressure vessel heads, heat exchanger shells, and similar fabricated pressure equipment rather than round bar or forgings.

Grade A is the leanest of the three A204 grades (A, B, C), which are differentiated primarily by carbon and manganese content rather than molybdenum level. Adding roughly 0.5% molybdenum over a plain carbon plate steel like A515 or A516 raises high-temperature strength and creep resistance, letting Grade A hold useful strength at service temperatures where plain carbon plate would start to soften. It's supplied in the as-rolled, normalized, or normalized-and-tempered condition depending on section thickness and application, with a minimum tensile strength of roughly 450 MPa (65,000 psi) and minimum yield of 255 MPa (37,000 psi).

15Mo3 and 16Mo3 refer to the same Werkstoffnummer (1.5415) under the older DIN 17155 and current EN 10028-2 standards — the naming changed when the specification was superseded, not the alloy. Equivalents are approximate; confirm against the applicable specification before substituting material.

Values reflect the ASTM A204 Grade A heat-analysis limits. The prior version of this page carried a generic low-carbon composition table (0.08% max carbon, no molybdenum) that did not match this alloy — replaced here with the correct Grade A chemistry.

Machinability Explained

A204 Grade A machines close to a plain low-carbon plate steel, with the modest molybdenum addition making a smaller difference than the chromium-molybdenum grades used in piping fittings. The alloy carbides raise abrasive wear slightly over a straight carbon plate, but Grade A's low carbon and lean alloy content keep hardness and cutting forces manageable — it's a comparatively forgiving material to work compared with the heavier Cr-Mo grades in this reference library.

Because it's supplied and used as plate, the machining work is different in character from bar or forging stock: edge prep and beveling for welded joints, nozzle opening bores, flange facing on fabricated vessel components, and drilling for bolted connections. Stock removal rates can be aggressive on plate edges, and interrupted cuts are common where flame-cut or sheared edges are being cleaned up before welding.

A coated carbide grade suited to general low-alloy steel work handles A204 well without needing the toughness margin required for the more heavily alloyed forging grades. Sharp, positive geometries reduce cutting forces on thinner sections, while a wear-resistant coating extends life on the abrasive scale and mill finish typically found on plate surfaces.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, short tool overhang, and nominal material hardness. Adjust down for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or harder-than-nominal stock.
