ASTM A516 Grade 60 is the lower-strength option in the A516 pressure vessel plate family, sitting below Grades 65 and 70. It's specified where a vessel's design doesn't need the higher tensile strength of the upper grades, letting fabricators use somewhat thicker sections for the same design pressure while keeping the same forgiving weldability and toughness that defines the whole A516 series. Like the rest of the family, it's intended for welded boilers, tanks, and pressure vessels operating at moderate and lower temperatures where notch toughness matters.
Grade 60 carries the lowest carbon content of the four A516 grades, which keeps its cutting forces and abrasiveness at the mild end of the family's range. Plates 1.5 in. and under are typically supplied as-rolled; thicker sections must be normalized. Either way, Grade 60 stays soft and predictable to machine — there's no hardening treatment involved, and the modest alloy content keeps tool wear low compared with higher-carbon steels or heat-treated plate.

Grade 60 is the mildest-machining member of the A516 family — its 0.21% carbon maximum is the lowest of the four grades, which keeps cutting forces low and tool wear minimal. There's no heat treatment beyond as-rolled or normalizing, so hardness stays in the low range typical of mild structural and pressure vessel steel, and there's no work-hardening tendency to manage during normal turning or milling operations.
The as-rolled surface is the one consistent source of extra tool wear across all A516 grades: mill scale is harder and more abrasive than the base metal, so the first pass into an unmachined face costs more edge life than subsequent passes. Once past the scale, Grade 60 cuts cleanly with continuous-to-segmented chips that break well with a standard chipbreaker geometry.
Because it's the softest grade in the A516 family, Grade 60 is a good candidate for pushing feed rates a bit harder than Grade 65 or 70 without excessive tool wear, provided rigidity and workholding support the increased cutting forces. A general-purpose coated carbide grade for low-carbon steel is more than adequate — there's little reason to reach for a premium wear-resistant grade on this material.
