Material Overview

ASTM A516 Grade 70 is the highest-strength, most widely specified grade in the A516 pressure vessel plate family. Its higher tensile and yield strength compared with Grades 55, 60, and 65 lets designers use thinner sections for a given design pressure, which is a major reason it's the default choice for a large share of boiler shells, pressure vessels, and separators built in North America. It shares the family's core purpose: dependable notch toughness at moderate and lower service temperatures in welded pressure equipment.

Grade 70 carries the highest carbon and manganese content of the four A516 grades, which is what delivers its strength advantage without resorting to alloy additions or heat treatment beyond as-rolled or normalized condition. Plates 1.5 in. (40 mm) and under are typically supplied as-rolled; heavier sections must be normalized to meet the specification's toughness intent. Despite being the strongest grade in the family, Grade 70 is still a low-carbon steel by any broader standard, and it machines with only a modest increase in cutting force compared with the lower grades.

Machinability Explained

Grade 70's higher carbon and manganese content compared with the rest of the A516 family translates into modestly higher cutting forces and slightly faster tool wear than Grade 55 or 60, but the difference is incremental rather than dramatic — this is still a low-carbon, non-heat-treated pressure vessel steel. There's no hardening step to fight, and the microstructure stays consistent whether the plate is as-rolled or normalized.

As with every grade in this family, the as-rolled mill scale is the single biggest factor in tool wear on unmachined faces — it's harder and more abrasive than the parent metal underneath. Once through the scale, Grade 70 produces continuous-to-segmented chips that respond well to standard chipbreaker geometries, and surface finish is predictable across a wide range of feeds and speeds.

Because Grade 70 sits at the top of the A516 strength range, it benefits slightly more from a coated carbide grade with good abrasion resistance than the softer grades do, particularly on heavier roughing passes or thicker normalized sections. A general-purpose steel-cutting grade still covers this material comfortably; there's no need for specialty tooling reserved for hardened or high-alloy steels.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, machined (not scaled) surfaces, and short tool overhang. Reduce speeds when cutting into mill scale, on interrupted cuts, or on heavier normalized sections.
