AISI/SAE P20 is, by a wide margin, the most widely used steel in the P-series mold steel family, and one of the most common mold steels in industry overall. With roughly 0.28–0.40% carbon and moderate chromium (1.40–2.00%) and molybdenum (0.30–0.55%) additions, P20 is formulated to be delivered pre-hardened — typically in the high-20s to low-30s HRC — straight from the mill, so toolmakers can machine the finished cavity directly without a separate hardening cycle afterward. That pre-hardened delivery condition is the defining trait of the grade: it trades the very top end of wear resistance for consistent, predictable machining and minimal distortion risk on large mold blocks.
P20's blend of moderate hardness, good toughness, and strong polishability is why it dominates plastic injection mold cavities and cores, along with zinc die-casting dies, where a smooth cosmetic surface finish matters as much as durability. Larger or more demanding tooling sometimes steps up to the nickel-modified P20+Ni variant for better through-hardness uniformity in thick sections, but standard P20 remains the default choice for the broad middle of mold-making work.

P20's reputation as a workhorse mold steel comes largely from how predictably it machines. Delivered pre-hardened at roughly 28–32 HRC, it sits well below the hardness of a fully hardened tool steel, so cutting forces stay moderate and tool life is good with a properly selected coated carbide grade. Unlike an annealed-then-hardened steel, there's no post-machining heat treatment to worry about distorting a finished cavity — what you cut is what you get, which is a major reason mold shops favor it for cavities and cores that need to hold tight dimensions.
Chip formation on P20 is generally favorable, producing manageable chips that respond well to standard chipbreaker geometries at moderate feed rates. The moderate alloy content (chromium and molybdenum) provides enough hardness to resist built-up edge issues that plague softer steels, while staying low enough that abrasive wear on the tool remains manageable. This middle-of-the-road behavior is exactly why P20 is considered an easy grade to dial in compared with harder tool steels.
Where P20 does demand attention is in surface finish, since so much of its use case revolves around polishability for cosmetic mold surfaces. A sharp, well-honed edge and stable cutting parameters that avoid chatter matter more here than on a purely structural part, because any tool marks or edge degradation can translate directly into visible defects on the molded product. Selecting a grade with good edge retention and a coating suited to finish passes pays off more than chasing maximum metal-removal rate.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, good-quality raw material, short tool overhang, and material at its typical 28–32 HRC pre-hardened delivery condition. Adjust down for interrupted cuts, poor rigidity, or harder-than-nominal stock.
