Super Duplex 2507 (UNS S32750, Wnr. 1.4410, also known as SAF 2507 or F53 in forged form) sits at the top of the standard-duplex-to-super-duplex ladder. It uses the same dual-phase austenite-ferrite microstructure that defines every duplex grade, but pushes the alloy content well beyond standard duplex 2205: chromium climbs to 24-26% (versus 2205's 22-23%), molybdenum reaches 3-5% (versus 2205's roughly 3%), and nitrogen is raised to 0.24-0.32% — close to double 2205's level. That heavier alloying is what earns 2507 its super duplex classification: its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N) runs approximately 42-45, well clear of 2205's mid-30s and far beyond 316L.
The combination of roughly double the yield strength of standard austenitic stainless, exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress-corrosion cracking, and mechanical toughness across a wide temperature range makes 2507 the specification of choice for the most demanding chloride and sour-service environments: subsea equipment, offshore risers and manifolds, seawater desalination plants, and chemical processing components where even standard 2205 doesn't provide enough corrosion margin.

Estimated PREN (Cr + 3.3×Mo + 16×N) is approximately 42-45, at the upper end of the super duplex range and well above standard duplex grades like 2205 (mid-30s).
2507 carries the dual-phase machining character common to every duplex grade — the austenite half of the microstructure work-hardens moderately, while the ferrite half resists work hardening but adds stiffness and resistance to shearing — but at 2507's alloy level, both effects are pushed toward the upper end of what this site covers. The higher chromium, molybdenum, and especially nitrogen content compared with 2205 raise cutting forces and heat generation at the tool edge substantially; nitrogen in particular strengthens the austenite phase directly, making the material noticeably tougher to shear, pass after pass, than even 255.
Tool selection has to prioritize edge strength and heat resistance over a fine, aggressive geometry — a robust, wear-resistant coated substrate with solid edge support survives the sustained mechanical and thermal load far better than a sharp but fragile edge. Rigidity through the entire machine-toolholder-workholding chain is not optional at this alloy level; any deflection shows up immediately as accelerated wear, edge chipping, or poor surface finish. Reduced speeds and feeds relative to 2205, generous coolant flow to manage 2507's low thermal conductivity, and an insert grade purpose-built for high-alloy super duplex work are the baseline for consistent results on this grade.

Values assume favorable cutting conditions: a well-matched insert grade, rigid tool and workpiece clamping, short tool overhang, and adequate coolant. Reduce speeds further for interrupted cuts or thin-wall parts prone to deflection.
