Where a generic 2205 mill certificate typically lands in the mid-30s for PREN (pitting resistance equivalent), the "+" in Uranus 45N+ signals that Aperam holds chromium and molybdenum toward the top of the standard range specifically to guarantee a minimum PREN of 36, giving buyers a corrosion-resistance floor that plain 2205 doesn't promise on paper.

Everything else about the alloy is standard duplex behavior: a solidification and heat-treatment process that splits the microstructure into roughly equal parts austenite and ferrite, giving Uranus 45N+ nearly double the yield strength of 316L along with markedly better resistance to chloride pitting, crevice attack, and stress-corrosion cracking. That combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and a guaranteed PREN floor is why Uranus 45N+ shows up in offshore and subsea hardware, pressure vessels, desalination equipment, and chemical tankers — the same application space as standard 2205, with a tighter corrosion guarantee for specifiers who want it in writing.

Machinability Explained

Uranus 45N+ machines like any 2205-family duplex: the roughly 50/50 split between austenite and ferrite means the tool is shearing two different phases on every pass. The austenite half work-hardens the way 316 does, just moderated by only making up half the structure, while the ferrite half barely work-hardens at all but is stiffer and more abrasive, driving cutting forces and edge temperatures higher than any standard austenitic grade.

Because the guaranteed-PREN chemistry sits at the alloy-rich end of the 2205 window, treat Uranus 45N+ as a slightly more demanding version of standard 2205 rather than a distinct machining challenge — the same fundamentals apply: prioritize a tough, wear-resistant coated carbide grade and a rigid, low-deflection setup over an aggressive, fine-honed edge. Coolant matters for pulling heat out of the cut given 2205-family alloys' modest thermal conductivity, and the ferrite content keeps chip control more predictable than on a fully austenitic grade, but sustained mechanical load on the tool — not work hardening — is the dominant wear mechanism.
