A cartridge is the cutting unit on its own — insert seat, clamp and screw, with no shank. It bolts into a boring head, a modular bar or a special tool body, so one body can run several sizes, and a worn seat is replaced instead of the whole tool.
That is why a cartridge is ordered by its insert, not by a shank size: start with the insert shape the body was built around, then the lead angle and the hand.
