HTC HSS Burrs & Rotary Files

A rotary burr removes metal where a milling cutter cannot reach or cannot be set up: weld beads, cast flash, port work, die and mold blending, and every deburring job that ends up in a die grinder rather than on a machine.

These are high-speed steel, which is the deliberate choice on the softer and gummier materials — aluminum, brass, copper, plastics, mild steel. HSS takes a keener, more widely spaced tooth than carbide, so it shears the material and clears the chip instead of loading up and glazing over. It is also far more forgiving of the side load a hand-held grinder puts into a tool, and it costs less to replace when one does get snapped.

Shapes and what they are for

  • Cylindrical — flat side walls and squaring up a slot; the general-purpose shape.
  • Ball — concave pockets, blending radii, opening up a hole.
  • Oval and olive — contoured blending where a ball would dig in.
  • Tree, pointed — reaching into a corner or an acute internal angle.
  • Flame — port work and compound curves.
  • Flat — working a face down without cutting into the wall behind it.

What is in this range

  • Shank sizes: 1/8" and 1/4"
  • Material: high-speed steel
  • Also available as sets — 20 and 26 piece rotary cutter sets covering the common shapes
  • Origin: made in the USA by HTC Mfg.

Cutting hardened steel, stainless or cast iron? Carbide holds an edge far longer in those: see HTC Carbide Burrs or browse the shapes from the burrs guide.
